who da fuck is Danny Brown??

Updated. 02-27-13. Same Article. This can be found up top near early Mar.

Danny Brown is a Detroit emcee hailing from the gritty grounds of the Lynnwood Neighborhood. He sports a missing tooth proudly from a childhood mishap caused while skating. Nevertheless, a frequent look of Danny’s is a huge smile, wide and goofy, displaying obvious aesthitic evidence of his skating event. Danny Brown is a lively emcee, one who is distinct, clever, posed within an odd-ball mystique. Getting straight to the point, I bring to you the strange love of Danny Brown: “XXX”.

This body of work is uber- creative. Leading from the artistic yet simple cover, all the way to the blantant song titles. He’s actually been out on the scene for quite a while. Other works you may be familiar with are his “The Hybrid” and other works out in the hip hop outer space, such as the so-so pieces done with Black Milk. Even so, “XXX” is the best Danny Brown album.

Acknowledging Danny’s existence in the current rap world, would be like putting sushi on pizza. It’s just to weird, yet clever. Having started out in 2003, he went from hanging around the likes of Chips an Dopehead, to much bigger names now like ASAP Rocky, Ab-Soul, even having performed on the same stage as Insane Clown Posse. Now, back in the day he was pretty much on his own “repping” his Dexter-Lynnwood set illustrating times of crack hustling, and trying to make “re-up”.
Hard times for Danny Brown, indeed.

Years later, some artistic work with Black milk was shelled out onto the hip hop underground, and although in my himble opinion, it was not the best stuff, it displayed the potential an growth Danny had in order to shine as a definitive rapper.

Fast forwarding to today, we witness this aforementioned growth in Danny Brown’s stylistic hip hop. He’s different yet interesting, odd yet humble, an overall a decent emcee. He has good flow, a good sense of energy, and possess constructive rhymes. For the most part, “XXX” is a biographical album consisting of drug-addled lyrics, random screams and silly-sounding smirks, all the while layered over some great production, and electronic-synthesized beats that enhance the flavor of Danny and his flow.

It’s tracks like “Lie4” that prove the duality of Danny Brown’s personality showing that he can be silly, yet brutally honest, funny yet full of some serious swagger! Other tracks prove this side of his hyper intensive mindset and that’s “Monopoly” and “Blunt After Blunt” (which I posted a video for). But to me, it’s the other more laid-back lyrical reflections on Danny’s past that really stick out, and it’s songs like the album-titled “XXX”. A song about the ups and downs of drug-addiction, and prescription mess that don’t seem to help at all. Another track that I truly loved was “I will”. Here we have yet another track that ventures off into the wild world of Danny Brown, and lyrically, he does a great job of detailing the adventures of indiscreet sex.

Withal, this album is a must-buy for any Danny Brown fan, or anyone who is willing to try something different when it comes to various hip hop flavors. I loved this album from start to finish. Filled with vibrant, and funky beats courtesy of “Skywlkr”, great production, and chalk-full of wild and detailed Danny Brown personality! I say buy it, or at least check out the video of Danny I posted below (lol)!

  1. Yo Bro whats good? I Thoroughly enjoyed the review on Danny Brown, I am now listening to his other music besides the video posted, and think you had all the details just right. On another note, the Wiz Khalifa review, hilarious, and once again very accurately described and detailed. I agree 100%. Keep the reviews coming!
